Gold Weight Converter — Tola, Masha, Gram and Ounce With Price

Gold in Pakistan is bought by the tola and masha, quoted by the gram in most apps, and traded internationally by the troy ounce — so the same necklace appears as three different numbers. Convert the weight once, then price it at today’s rate for the purity you actually hold.

Jewellery is sold on gross weight plus making, and bought back on net gold after the making charge is deducted — that gap is Rs 20,529 on this piece. For Zakat the taxable value is the gold content at the market rate, so use the “pure gold value” figure in the Zakat calculator, not the price you paid.
How to use it
  1. Enter the weight and its unit — Type any amount in grams, kilograms, tola or bhori, masha, troy ounces, ordinary ounces or grains — every other unit updates instantly.
  2. Set the rate per gram of 24K — This is the figure the bazaar and the news channels publish. The tool derives the per-tola rate from it, so you never have to multiply 11.664 by hand.
  3. Pick the purity of your item — 22K is the standard jewellery hallmark here, 21K is common in Gulf shops, and bullion is 24K. Only the fine gold inside the piece is valued.
  4. Add the making charge — Enter the jeweller’s making or wastage percentage to see both sides: what the piece costs on the counter and what it comes back to when you sell it for melt.
What makes it different
  • One tola is 11.664 grams and exactly 180 grains, and twelve masha make one tola — the conversion the old jewellers’ scale used.
  • Purity is applied to the gold content, so a 22K item is valued on 91.67 percent of its gross weight rather than the full figure.
  • Buy-back is shown after deducting making, which is the number people are usually surprised by — the loss on resale is mostly labour, not gold.
  • The pure gold value is the right figure to carry into the Zakat calculator, since Zakat is due on the metal, not on what the shop charged.

Gold Weight & Value — questions

How many grams is one tola of gold?

11.664 grams. Pakistani jewellers still weigh with the tola and the masha, where one masha is 0.972 grams and twelve masha make one tola, while almost every price chart on the internet is per gram — hence this converter.

How do I work out the price of a tola from the gram rate?

Multiply the 24K gram rate by 11.664. At Rs 12,000 a gram that is Rs 139,968 for a pure tola, and about Rs 128,309 for a 22K tola because only 10.69 grams of it is fine gold. The shop adds making on top of that metal value.

What is the difference between a troy ounce and a normal ounce?

A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams and is the unit bullion and international gold prices use. The kitchen or avoirdupois ounce is lighter at 28.3495 grams, so a figure copied from a food label will undervalue your gold by roughly nine percent.

Why does a jeweller offer less than the calculator shows?

The counter price includes making charges, polishing and often wastage, none of which are gold. On the way back you are paid for the metal only, so a piece bought with 8 percent making loses that margin twice — once going in and once coming out.

How much Zakat is due on gold jewellery?

Zakat is calculated on the market value of the gold you own at the end of your zakat year, at 2.5 percent, provided you cross the nisab. Enter the fine gold weight here, take the pure gold value into the Zakat calculator, and use the silver or lower nisab basis if your scholar follows that view.

Is 22K the same as 916 gold?

Yes. A 916 hallmark means 916 parts per thousand of fine gold, which is the same as 22K at 91.67 percent. The other stamps you will see on imported pieces are 750 for 18K and 585 for 14K.
