Gold and Silver Nisab Calculator in PKR
Enter today’s gold and silver rate per gram and the calculator turns 87.48 g of gold and 612.36 g of silver into rupees, then tells you whether the wealth you entered crosses that line and what 2.5% comes to.
| Gold value (0 g) | Rs 0 |
| Silver value (0 g) | Rs 0 |
| Gold nisab (87.48 g) | Rs 1,049,760 |
| Silver nisab (612.36 g) | Rs 91,854 |
| Net wealth × 2.5% | Rs 0 |
Nisab in plain words
Nisab is a threshold, not a tax bracket. If the wealth you have held for a full lunar year sits above it, zakat of 2.5% applies to the whole of that wealth; if it sits below, no zakat is due. The threshold is defined by two metal weights, so its rupee value moves every day with the bazaar rate — which is exactly why a fixed “nisab is Rs X” figure you find in an old article is usually wrong by the time you read it.
| Basis | Weight | In metric tola | Rupee value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold nisab | 87.48 g | 7.5 tola | 87.48 × today’s gold rate per gram |
| Silver nisab | 612.36 g | 52.5 tola | 612.36 × today’s silver rate per gram |
One metric tola is 11.664 g, which is the weight Pakistani jewellers and the State Bank use. Older articles sometimes quote 11.664 g as “3 tola” by mistake — 87.48 g is 7.5 tola, not 3.
Worked example at illustrative rates
Suppose gold is Rs 210,000 per gram and silver is Rs 3,000 per gram. The gold nisab is then 87.48 × 210,000 = Rs 18,370,800 and the silver nisab is 612.36 × 3,000 = Rs 1,837,080. A person with Rs 2,500,000 in savings and no debt is far below the gold threshold but well above the silver one, so on the silver basis zakat is due: 2,500,000 × 2.5% = Rs 62,500 for the year.
Those two rupee figures change the moment the metal rates change, which is why the calculator above asks you to type today’s rate instead of shipping a hardcoded number that would be wrong within a week.
Which basis should you use?
The silver threshold is dramatically lower than the gold one, so using it brings more people into zakat and pays out more to recipients. That is the position taken by Hanafi fiqh, and it is what most Pakistani zakat organisations and scholars apply when calculating liability for cash, business stock and jewellery. The gold basis is the higher bar and is the view followed by some other schools and by organisations that publish an annual gold-based figure. If you are unsure which your community uses, the safest practical answer is to run both — the calculator shows both thresholds side by side — and ask your local imam or mufti about the one that applies to you.
What goes into the wealth you compare against nisab
- Counted: cash at home, bank and salary accounts, savings and prize bonds, gold and silver you own (including jewellery held as wealth), business inventory at selling price, shares bought for resale, money owed to you that you expect to receive.
- Deducted: debts you owe and are due to pay now, and in most treatments the portion of a long-term instalment plan that falls due in the coming year.
- Generally not counted: your house you live in, your car, furniture, business equipment and personal items like a phone — zakat is on wealth capable of growing, not on the things you use.
- Condition: the wealth has to have been above nisab for one lunar year (about 354–355 days), which is the hawl. The calculator lets you set the length of your zakat year so a Hijri year and a Gregorian year are not confused.
For the full 2.5% calculation with all the asset rows, use the Zakat calculator page. To value a specific piece of jewellery first — 22K by tola and masha — the gold weight converter gives you the fine-gold figure to enter here.
- Type today’s metal rates — Get the per-gram rate from your local bazaar or a jeweller. This is the only number that changes, so it is never hardcoded.
- Choose the nisab basis — Silver (612.36 g) is the lower threshold and what most Pakistani zakat bodies use; gold (87.48 g) is the higher one.
- Enter your wealth — Cash, bank balance, gold and silver by weight, business stock, investments and money owed to you, then subtract the debts you owe.
- Read the verdict — The panel shows the nisab value, whether you are above it, and the 2.5% amount if zakat is due.
- Both thresholds are shown in rupees and in tola, so you can compare against a jeweller’s weight.
- The lunar-year length is selectable, because 354 days is not 365 and a zakat year drifts through the calendar.
- Jewellery is entered by weight and karat, so 22K gold is counted at its fine-gold content rather than its gross weight.
- Your amounts are never sent anywhere — the calculation runs on the page you are looking at.
Nisab Calculator (PKR) — questions
What is nisab in PKR today?
There is no fixed rupee figure. Nisab is 87.48 g of gold or 612.36 g of silver, so its value in rupees is that weight multiplied by today’s rate for that metal — which is why the calculator asks you for the rate rather than guessing it for you.
How many tola is the gold nisab?
7.5 metric tola. One metric tola is 11.664 g, so 87.48 g ÷ 11.664 g = 7.5 tola. The silver nisab of 612.36 g is 52.5 tola.
Should I use the gold or the silver nisab?
The silver nisab is much lower and is the basis used in Hanafi fiqh and by most zakat organisations in Pakistan, so it is the one most people should check first. The gold nisab is the higher threshold followed by some other schools. Run both and ask your local scholar which applies to you.
Is nisab the same as fitrana?
No. Fitra (Sadaqat-ul-Fitr) is a fixed food measure per person at the end of Ramadan — roughly 3.8 kg of wheat, or half that in barley, dates or raisins depending on the item — and it is due regardless of whether you meet the wealth nisab.
Do I pay zakat on money in a savings account?
Cash in a bank account counts as zakatable wealth once it has been held for a lunar year above nisab. The interest element of a conventional account is treated separately from zakat by most scholars; the calculator’s job is only to get the 2.5% figure on your net wealth right.
What if my wealth goes above and below nisab during the year?
The usual position is that your zakat year runs from the first time you held wealth above nisab, and you calculate on whatever you hold at the end of that lunar year. Fluctuations during the year do not restart the clock as long as you stayed above the threshold.
